Art brings comfort to people with cancer in Durham Region
Coming to a hospital for cancer treatment and care can be a stressful experience for people living with cancer. Innovative partnerships between the ArtWorks for Cancer Foundation (AWFC), O’Neill Collegiate and Vocational Institute (O’Neill CVI) and R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre (DRCC) at Lakeridge Health are using the power of visual art to bring comfort to cancer patients and their families. Read the article here.

Non-profit encourages healing by bringing art to cancer wards

A couple of years ago, Dr. Weinberg was treating patients with skin cancer and performing breast-reconstruction surgeries when he noticed the stark decor of many hospital wards. “The environment was so hostile, unfriendly, unhealing and not transformative in any way. People go there and they feel alienated,” he said.

Dr. Weinberg decided to do something, so he contacted a group of friends and colleagues in the art world.

Trillium Health Partners receives donation from ArtWorks for Cancer Foundation

Trillium Health Partners is the first hospital to receive donated artwork from ArtWorks for Cancer Foundation.

“We are exceptionally grateful to Dr. Michael Weinberg and the ArtWorks for Cancer Foundation for their generous donation of artwork,” said Steve Hoscheit, president and CEO, Trillium Health Partners Foundation, in a press release.

Bringing Art into Cancer Care

“… while our hospital oncology units offer great care, they tend to be aesthetically dull and uninspiring places, offering little comfort. I also have many friends (most of whom are also U of T grads) who have been deeply touched by cancer and wanted to make an impact on the lives of others who have had similar experiences. In talking about how to do this, we came up with the idea for ArtWorks.”
